We’re about to set our clocks back, the weather is getting chilly (relatively speaking), and the holidays are right around the corner, so its definitely time for a few new picks to help you stay warm and brace yourself for the ensuing holiday madness! Here are our picks for the month of November…
Luke’s Pick – Maker’s Mark Cask Strength
For whatever reason (perhaps it’s the festive red wax) I always find myself reaching for a pour of Maker’s Mark as the holiday season begins. Maker’s is a classic wheated bourbon that always seems to work in a pinch, and you know the price is always going to be right. But if you find yourself craving that classic Maker’s profile, but you need something that packs a little more of a punch, then reach for a bottle of my November pick: Maker’s Mark Cask Strength!
This is the same Maker’s you know and love, but it is bottled at cask strength, which is usually in the 105-115 proof range. Right now, MSL has Batch No. 22-01 available, which comes in at 109.7 proof (54.85% abv).
On the nose, I find an initial wave of ethanol that fades to plenty of rich vanilla, caramel corn, cherry, and a pleasantly soft range of spice. On the palate, this wheater is full-bodied and provides a definite step up from the classic 90 proof release. More of that caramel corn flavor is accentuated by some roasted peanut and a punch of cinnamon that works nicely with the higher proof. The finish is medium-long with a lingering burn along with some caramel, vanilla, a hint of citrus, and just enough oak to provide some astringency to draw you back in for the next sip.
Maker’s Mark Cask Strength is a great wheated sipper that is perfect for the colder weather or an evening around the fire pit. This whiskey delivers plenty of flavor and the higher proof accentuates all of the classic Marker’s Mark characteristics that have made the brand a fan-favorite. Did I mention you can get this great bottle for around $40? Enough said!
Jon’s Pick – Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
The Nose…second barrel sweet char, overlaying a creamy deep vanilla/butterscotch with hints of strawberry. Not a bad start!
On the first sip all those flavors settle in their spots like a team of players taking their places. The creamy under-layer settles on the tongue as the strawberry (now bright, with lingering spice) coats your cheeks & roof of the mouth. This bourbon sings. It lingers forever. I’m so enjoying it neat, I don’t want to chase it with water at all. This is an exceptional bourbon. Exceptional. It’s been available a while. Don’t know why I waited so long.
As always, grab a bottle of these picks and come join us on the porch to share your thoughts!
Cheers y’all!
